Trench became Twenty One Pilots‘ first number-one album in Australia, debuting atop the ARIA Albums Chart on October 13. It also debuted at number one in New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic and the Netherlands, and was also the band’s first number-one album in those countries.

Trench debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 behind the soundtrack for A Star Is Born, with 175,000 album-equivalent units, of which 135,000 were pure album sales. This marked the band’s biggest sales week in the country, surpassing their number-one album Blurryface. It is the band’s second US top five album. The album then dipped to number 7 in its second week with 49,000 units. The album debuted at number one on the Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts, and every song from the album charted in the top 25 of the US Hot Rock Songs chart. The album also debuted at number two on the Canadian Albums Chart with 11,000 album-equivalent units. The album was leading the UK midweek charts upon its release with 6,000 combined sales, but debuted number two on the UK Albums Chart with 29,835 copies (including 6,178 sales equivalent streams), almost 2,000 behind the soundtrack album A Star Is Born, making it the band’s highest charting album to date in the country. It also became the band’s highest charting album in Ireland, Scotland, Finland, and Norway, debuting at number two in these countries. In France, the album debuted at number nine on the SNEP Albums Chart, selling 6,400 units. In the US, Trench was certified Gold on December 18, 2018.

By January 3, 2019, 7,000 cassette copies of Trench had been sold in the US, making it the third most sold cassette album of 2018 behind Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2, thus making a major contribution to the 23% rise in cassette sales in the US in 2018.

The day of the lead singles’ release, the band announced a new world tour, called «The Bandito Tour», would begin on October 16, 2018. It was later revealed that Awolnation and Max Frostwould perform as the opening act for the first North American leg of the tour. On August 19, 2018, Twenty One Pilots released an unlisted YouTube video promoting a concert at the Brixton Academy in London; the performance was titled «A Complete Diversion», a reference to lyrics in the song «Nico and the Niners» («And start a concert, a complete diversion«). The concert took place on September 12, 2018, a little less than a month before the scheduled release date of the album. A second North American leg ending on July 30, 2019 was added to the tour, including shows in Mexico and Canada as well as two shows in the band’s hometown, Columbus.

Terminating Files

The black and white Dema map

The website changed on Friday, April 2, 2021 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.

Replaced _.jpg on Terminating Files Dmaorg, originally yellow.

At the top of the page, a line of text reading «//Terminating Files…» appeared, followed by a continually changing file name. The file name that followed was either the name of an actual image on the page (such as se__elf.jpg), zero to three dots, or text randomly generated by the website with a random ending such as .txt or .zip.
Below this line of text was a progress bar, which appears to have started its progression right as the website changed at 3 p.m. EST. The progress bar restarted from the beginning with every aforementioned file name that appeared above it, but fans quickly noticed that each time the bar reset it would go a little further in small increments. Utilizing the source code of the site, user Tree on the twenty one pilots Discord server was able to determine that a specific equation in the script, p=(e/to)*100, dictated how fast the progress bar was moving and user Jim_NotJosh’sDog calculated when it would reach 100%. In the equation, the value of «to» was equal to 259200 (or the amount of seconds in 72 hours), and the value of «e» increased by 1 every second and changed on every subsequent reload of the page. For example, if «e» was 94391, then the width of the progress bar, «p,» and thus the percentage of completion, would be 36.4% [p=(94391/259200) x 100]. Assuming that «e» began counting from 1 on Friday, April 2 at 3 p.m. EST, it would reach 259200 and complete on Monday, April 5 at 3 .p.m EST.

The full site was inverted using a line of code, turning the page black and inverting all the images. The images that were already inverted on the original version of Dmaorg were replaced with inverted versions of themselves so that, once inverted again by the website, the inversions cancelled out and they looked the same. These images were the map of Dema (_ti_su_p.png, 013 01MOON 08), the black letter (_he_a_vy.jpg, 018 07 MOON 05), and the photo of Tyler in the river from Jumpsuit (2_1_2.gif, 018 07MOON 08). The map of Dema, interestingly, was made completely black and white. The original version was tinted slightly warm; this tint was removed in the Terminating Files black and white version.

Notably, the image with yellow lines (_.jpg from 017 02MOON 12) was inverted, but not to the deep blue that would be seen if the original yellow image were inverted. Instead, an image with red lines was used, causing the inverted image to appear with cyan highlights.

Timeline

On April 21, 2018, Reddit user jakedello, found a URL hidden in a GIF on the Vessel page of the Twenty One Pilots store. The URL, dmaorg.info resulted in a page which read:

The still frame from the GIF on the webstore also revealed more of a URL. /found was discovered after dmaorg.info, and /clancy.html was found by combining multiple frames. In between /found and /clancy were a block of 9 dots, with the lower rightmost dot being separated from the rest by an underscore. These dots relate to the songs on the cover of Blurryface, and their track numbers, , , , , , , , , and . These numbers are identical to the violation code found at dmaorg.info. Substituting this code into the URL produced dmaorg.info/found/15398642_14/clancy.html.

At this URL, multiple images were found, along with text which revealed details about a character by the name of Clancy, and his struggle with Dema.

On May 9, 2018, another letter was added to the page.

On May 30, 2018, a GIF of a cheetah with letters was added.

On June 30, 2018, several more images were added, as well as an audio clip, which when reversed was revealed to by Tyler Joseph saying «We are Banditos». Additionally, the filename for this audio clip was 2018_514_3_8.m4a. When these numbers are assigned letters, they spell out TR_EN_C_H, the name of the album.

On July 1, 2018, more images were added.

On July 5 and July 6, 2018 more images, letters and GIFs were added, this time revealing the color yellow as significant to the era.

On July 8, 2018 a photograph and letter were added. This was the last update before «Jumpsuit» and «Nico and the Niners» were released.

On July 18, 2018 another letter from Clancy was added, this time describing the «Jumpsuit» music video.

On January 22, 2019, the day «Chlorine»‘s music video was released, a letter was added. It describes Clancy’s return to Dema and confusion about where he belongs.

On Friday April 2, 2021 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time, the website changed again. At the top, a line of text reading «//Terminating Files…» appeared, followed by a continually changing file name. The full site was inverted using a line of code, turning the page black and turning all the images dark. A progress bar also appeared.

2013 saw the release of the third album and signed debut, Vessel. Ten days after the band started a concert tour series titled Trip for Concerts, with Winter 2013 dates running through to March. In March 2013, the band performed at the first major festival, SXSW. An EP featuring some of these performances was released in Australia. The Spring 2013 Trip for Concerts ran from the end of March through May. In June, the band went to Europe and the UK for the first time and appeared at several festivals throughout the summer. The band joined Fall Out Boy during September on their Save Rock and Roll Arena Tour. The Trip for Concerts resumed in October and ran through December.

Release

On March 17, 2015, the band announced the album’s title, track listing and release date. The band’s fans crashed their website attempting to pre-order the album. The band released their new single «Fairly Local» on the same day accompanied by its music video which premiered on official Fueled by Ramen YouTube channel.

On April 6, the band released the second single of the album, «Tear in My Heart», with an official music video released through YouTube. The third single, «Stressed Out», was released on April 28 with a music video. On May 4, 2015, the band posted a YouTube video streaming the audio of the album’s 6th track, «Lane Boy», and released «Ride» seven days later through the same media; both were also singles, being released on the 4th and 12th, respectively. Between the 11th and the 14th the band toured the UK. The music video for «Ride» was released on May 14, directed by Reel Bear Media.

On May 19, 2015, the duo performed at the iHeartRadio Theater LA in Burbank, CA to celebrate the album’s release. The concert was livestreamed on iHeartRadio’s website. The band has shows and festival stops lasting from May 19 to December 14. On July 20, the music video for «Lane Boy» was released. The band is set to play the UK in November. The tour sold out in a matter of minutes.

The album is available on CD, digital download, a black two-vinyl set, a limited edition split-color (Black/Red) two disk vinyl set, and a limited-edition red cassette tape. A Hot Topic exclusive vinyl also exists, which is decorated to look like an ink-blot. As no two disks are exactly the same, these vinyls are extremely rare and are worth hundreds of dollars each. The Hot Topic exclusive Vinyls are not available from any official TOP stores, and are no longer sold by Hot Topic.

Background and writing

Regarding the writing process of the track, Tyler Joseph described it as a «rash» for referring him to dig back into older songwriting habits and methods. He explained: » It’s another thing when comes up organically – almost like an old habit that is inevitably a part of who you are, and still makes up the fibres of who you are. It’s mostly dormant, but every once in a while it flares up. That’s what «Choker» is: a flare up of an old rash that we thought we cured. And we’re proud of that rash! We like that rash. The rash is who we are. We had to itch it.»

In the same interview, Tyler recalled: «I remember when I locked into the writing of , it just flowed; it was scary how easy that song was for me to write, and it was because I knew I was coming from a place, and I was in a realm that I had spent a lot of time in before. And I was comfortable there; I was familiar with my surroundings. And that’s why it was such an easy song to write.» He also stated that, although the band is evolving and maturing, he doesn’t need to not look back to his old writing styles previously established on pre-Blurryface albums, such as Twenty One Pilots, Regional at Best and Vessel. «I think «Choker» is the beginning of me being okay with the entire body of work, and feeling like I don’t have to steer away from some things that people would consider from our older records.»

Versions

Holding on to You was originally recorded for Regional at Best, but following the band’s signing with Fueled by Ramen and subsequent discontinuation of the album, the song was included on the bonus edition of the album Vessel.

On May 17, 2011, a teaser snippet featuring Tyler Joseph performing the song with no musical accompaniment was uploaded to the band’s YouTube channel. At this point, the track was titled «Forrest».

Background and production

Twenty One Pilots released their fourth studio album, Blurryface, on May 17, 2015. The album topped the Billboard 200 and produced two top five singles, «Stressed Out» and «Ride», peaking at number two and number five, respectively, on the Billboard Hot 100. The songs, along with the single «Heathens» from the Suicide Squad soundtrack, launched the band into mainstream success in 2016. The duo embarked on two world tours in support of the album from 2015 to 2017. In an interview with Alternative Press, the band stated that they would be «going dark» in order to focus on new music, and added that they would focus on the lyrical content and bring back the «authenticity, lyrics, delivery, and fearlessness of songwriting» of the band’s eponymous album. Following the five final dates of the band’s tour, Tour De Columbus, the duo entered a year-long hiatus beginning on July 6, 2017.

The conceptual world of «Trench» was created before the songs from the album had been written, departing from the band’s regular songwriting process where they would create the album song by song. It is unclear when production of Trench began; however, Joseph was working on the track «Bandito» as early as 2015, during the Blurryface Tour. Joseph produced the album’s fourteen tracks within his private home studio, while Josh Dun’s drum tracks were recorded at United Recording Studios. Mutemath frontman and keyboardist Paul Meany co-produced and co-wrote some of the project, following his previous collaboration with Twenty One Pilots for the TOPxMM EP and on the Emotional Roadshow World Tour. Adam Hawkins mixed the album in its entirety. The album’s «drop dead due date to get ahead of production and distribution» was August 15, 2018, less than two months before the release of the album.
